Poppy Victory: Moor Lore

Moor Lore was birthed in collaboration with MAKE South West in response to Dartmoor’s rich folklore and 5800 year old textile artifacts from the archives at RAMM. The Dartmoor legend of Weaver Knowles from Deancombe, and the magical folklore of Hag Stones became the stories behind the banner, steeped in earth and water. Earth is represented with a clay resist print, foraged from Dean Burn River and the natural formation of hag stones where both water and earth create a mystical form in harmony. Water, expressed within the deep tones of Indigo, is inspired by the tradition of offerings given to rivers over the course of lifetimes, and the river flowing through Knowles’ tale.

There once was a greedy old man called Knowles who was always after the pound,

He died at his loom, became a loon,
and was turned into a big black hound

Taken to a river
where he was destined to shiver
and his soul is trapped forever
